I read the Black Book of Secrets by F.E. Higgins. It`s about a young boy named Ludlow Fitch. In his childhood, he had to be a pickpocket for his poor, alcoholic parents. In the beginning of the book, his parents knock him unconscious and drag him to Barton Gumbroot, a dentist, where his parents plan to sell twelve of his teeth for money. Luckily, Ludlow is able to escape. He steals a carriage ride and it takes him to Pagus Parvus. After that, he meets a nice gentleman named Joe Zabbidou, who just arrived at Pagus Parvus. He finds out that Joe is a secret pawn broker. Joe offers a job to Ludlow as an apprentice. Ludlow accepts the job and is in charge of a black book, where he writes other people`s secrets. When everything is going great in town, Jeremiah Ratchet, who blackmails and threatens the whole city, tries to steal the Black Book of Secrets. Once he had the book, he planned to blackmail people and give out personal secrets. In the end, Jeremiah doesn`t get the book, and he tries to steal Joe`s special frog and he gets bit. Jeremiah dies from the poisonous frog bite. Joe and Ludlow decide to leave Pagus Parvus and Ludlow agrees to become the secret pawnbroker after Joe retires.
